LINER NOTES FOR LESSER [from READ THIS MUSIC]

I'm tranced again gawking up slackjawed at the full moon, dreaming sketch outlines of the blue bedroom I grew up in all those ancient summertimes ago...then I'm looking down at hands and wrists and forearms, all the scars I've harvested from forgotten accidents...surely my soul's in the same condition, all banged and nicked up and weathered but forgetful about most of the painful stories...a selective memory, for which I'm sometimes thankful.

because I'm still alive and I'm never gonna die. there's always the next new springtime and the next virgin blossoms on the vine...there's always another filthy barroom toilet where I can puke my guts out and shit blood and giggle beneath my breath...there's always Tomorrow's True Love to come shelter me heal me then wreck me all over again.

come on the sunshine and the rain,
I've forgotten my own name,
nothing matters now.
I'm an embryo with sharp teeth,
I'm the world's finest thief,
nothing matters now.

I think I'll wander back inside the house and hit myself with another stiff one, 'cause if I'm not careful I might come down. I dreamed about Black Maria again last night...she's a soldier for the Lord now, she tossed me over for Jesus and she even quit drinking and man she used to drink me under the goddamn table. we broke each other's hearts but we made some supernatural music along the way. here's to her...cheers, baby...see you in the next life.

come on the sunshine and the rain,
I've forgotten my own name,
nothing matters now.
I'm an embryo with sharp teeth,
I'm the world's finest thief,
nothing matters now.

the governments and the wars they come and go, but the lovesongs linger on. the heartsick poems and paintings, the classic masterpiece nudes...that's all I really give a fuck about anymore. if I can write one great song or even one great line, I shall not get all Emily Dickinson on your ass...but you get the point. to hell with being "happy" and "successful" and all that garbage...I'm a working man, got a job to do, need to get back to my desk my computer keyboard and get typing, get at it. get back to my guitar and tape recorder, get at it.

hush now and listen...way off there in the distance...some mysterious swamp bird singing such a cracked-up desolate tune...blending with the rumble of the long black train pulling on out of town, and the scream of some ambulance siren, and the whine of a newborn baby...see, that's what I'm chasing, I just want to find my own voice and add my appropriate notes to that symphony...I just want to melt away into that voice and that music...I want to hit the high note and disappear at the same instant...(and do me a favor, if anyone asks you, tell 'em you never talked to me tonight. I was never here.)

come on the sunshine and the rain,
I've forgotten my own name,
nothing matters now.
I'm an embryo with sharp teeth,
I'm the world's finest thief,
nothing matters now.

Track Name: Thrill You
THRILL YOU

you don't have to pretend, you don't have to try
you've got the masterpiece inside
you caught the plague and learned to fly
you're living outside time

you've got the key to cancel grief
you've got a trumpet underneath
you're a burnt orange motorcycle thief
you're living in the sky

(chorus)
being dead ain't so bad
it's the dying that'll kill you
the praying just might save your life
the sin is gonna thrill you

you're strung out with a sad desire
with a faith so pure it loves the liar
you're listening to the widow's undead choir
you're living for the word

I guess someday I'll learn your fate
tonight I guess I'll have to wait
I'll lose you now I'll find you later
you're living in my bones

(chorus)
Track Name: Sweet Black Jesus Magic
SWEET BLACK JESUS MAGIC

watching my own body come back to life
cut my own throat then I polished the knife
but now I'm whole again
flesh and blood and bone again
got a black cat's paw in my back pocket
black cat's paw in my back pocket
black cat's paw in my back pocket
black cat's paw

praising the God who bailed me out of my grave
praising the God who dug up something to save
and hit my vein again
hit my vein one time again
with that Sweet Black Jesus Magic
Sweet Black Jesus Magic
Sweet Black Jesus Magic
Sweet Black Jesus Magic
Sweet Black Jesus Magic
Sweet Black Jesus Magic
Sweet Black Jesus Magic
Sweet Black Jesus
Track Name: East Atlanta Illuminations
EAST ATLANTA ILLUMINATIONS

the bubbles rise in my skull
like I'm a cracked glass full of black champagne
I feel like I'm home again
I feel like I'm home again

I just sit back on the burgundy couch
look out the window and swallow the night
I don't even have to bite

it just slides right down my throat
like a black snake full of black champagne

my teeth are vibrating like leaves in the storm
but I'm sedated and I'm warm
glowing soft gold all over my skin
glowing soft gold all over my skin

sweating light back out
from darkness swallowed in
and the TV hums a cobalt lullaby

I'm sprouting razor-edged wings I'm ready to fly
back into the black sky again

like a tiny bubble rising
to the rim
in a glass full of black champagne

like a tiny bubble rising
to the rim
in a glass full of black champagne
Track Name: Shebang Delang
SHEBANG DELANG

Shebang Delang
means I love you true
Shebang Delang
means no one but you
when I say Shebang Delang
it means I know your soul
when I say Shebang Delang
it means God made two halves a whole

hey sure and I'm believing
you're the pretty side of me
just like the apple bearing seeds
is growing from the crooked tree
Shebang Delang
Shebang Delang
Shebang hey
we're throwing a big Shebang

Shebang Delang
means you're my party girl
Shebang Delang
means you're my whole wide world
when I say Shebang Delang
it means we taste each other's blood
when I say Shebang Delang
it means God cut us open like a flood

hey sure and I'm believing
you're the fiery side of me
you set fire to my muddy river
and you set fire to my deep blue sea
Shebang Delang
Shebang Delang
Shebang hey
we're throwing a big Shebang

oh my, we're throwing a big
Shebang Delang
Shebang Delang
Shebang hey
we're throwing a big Shebang...
Track Name: Orchard
ORCHARD

wedding songs they come and they will go
the wind will rise and fall
sun and moon they spin and rivers flow
I will remember what you told me

(chorus)
and come October baby
I will meet you in the orchard
every year at the same time
I'm gonna meet you in the orchard

now, every generation learns to dance
across that floor they steal their moment
young lovers pick the lock their hearts burst open
like rotten jack-o-lanterns

(chorus)

you'll sing like a choir girl I'll sing like a thief
well sing our ugliest confessions
we'll build midnight backyard bonfires and watch
our soul smoke climb to the black heavens

(chorus)

and who would believe it if we told them what we see
the snake coiled around the willow tree
and who would believe it if we told them what we heard
the evening star singing to the morning bird

(chorus)

we'll trade the rings and then we'll jump the broom
we'll hold our breath til springtime
we'll build a house we'll build an altar bed
I will remember what you told me

(chorus)

we'll say our prayers above the planted seed
we'll drink each other's blood then finally
we'll jump the leaving train we'll roll away
into the ghost green valley

(chorus)
Track Name: Man Selling Roses
MAN SELLING ROSES

there's a man selling roses
on a dirty little corner downtown
his business is loveliness
but he wears the darkest frown
and the thorns upon is roses
make no crown

he gives you daisies for a dollar
then he gives you some free advice
he says, You only get one shot boy
to live up to your life
it's more than money
and I ain't gonna tell you twice

(chorus)
the money can't help you
when you're this far down
the judge can't hang you
when you're this far down

he says, Watch where you're stepping
these woods are full of snakes
there ain't no such thing as angels
and there ain't no lucky breaks
but there's always one decision
you can make

and he swears he thinks he's seen you
someplace sometime before
then he shuffles on down the sidewalk
into the Triple X video store
it's hard keeping faith
when the world is such a whore

(chorus)

there's a man selling roses
on a dirty little corner downtown
he makes his living from your luxuries
and he wears the darkest frown
and the thorns upon his roses
make no crown
Track Name: Sensible Shoes
SENSIBLE SHOES

you used to make my heart just jump
when you climbed up on them leopard skin pumps
roller skates painted red white and blue
but now you wear such sensible shoes

you used to make my temperature rise
with your harem slippers and velvet slides
army boots, roman sandals too
but now you wear such sensible shoes

(chorus)
sensible shoes
you ain't steppin' out so good
sensible shoes
when you go steppin' through my neighborhood
sensible shoes
honey whatever happened to you
I hate your sensible shoes

your feet used to dance so drastic
ramped up on pastel platform plastic
yellow stilettos used to slice me in two
but now you wear such sensible shoes

you used to be just something to cuss at
in your jet black crossover T-straps
your see-through galoshes too
but now you wear such sensible shoes

(chorus 2)
sensible shoes
you ain't steppin' out so good
sensible shoes
when you go steppin' through my neighborhood
sensible shoes
honey whatever happened to you
I hate your sensible shoes
sensible shoes
you ain't steppin' out so high
sensible shoes
when I see you go a-steppin' by
honey whatever happened to you
I hate your sensible shoes

what kind of lowdown job you holdin'
makes you wear shoes you grow cold in
you can't do it like you used to do
while you're wearing such sensible shoes

(chorus 2)

kick 'em off
go dancin' barefoot through the briar patch, baby
Track Name: Bloody 98
BLOODY 98

soul speed from Mobile to Jackson
it's really not a bad way to go
soul speed a head on collision
tell my baby for me I loved her so

if I make it into Mississippi
it's really not a bad place to go
though there's so much I'm leaving unsaid
my baby's the only one who knows

(chorus)
that I'd rather die fast than finish last
I'd rather die on the road to the next show
I'd rather die fast than make it last
I'd rather die on the road to the next show

she called it Bloody 98 to Jackson
she said it's really the only way to go
some girl back at the barbecue joint told us stories
about curses and accidents and bumps in the road

(chorus)
Track Name: Sweet Tooth for Daiquiries
SWEET TOOTH FOR DAIQUIRIES

she had a sweet tooth for daiquiris
and opium kisses
she had a furnished room in Nashville
then a fleabag in Memphis
she said she's born in a graveyard
on the 4th of July
yeah that's what she said
but sometimes she lied
baptized in blues
when she was just knee high

she went to New Orleans for schooling
studied everything she saw
she got A's in Tipitina's
and Preservation Hall
her campus was the Quarter
her homework never stopped
her study hall was
Jean Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop

(chorus)
and man she graduated early
at the top of her class
spent a year in Amsterdam
watching clouds roll past
she bought new shoes in Paris
sunglasses in Rome
and she wondered where she'd be
when she finally went home
she wondered where she'd be

she wasn't close to her family
she'd never been in love
no street address or phone number
to write her name above
she flew back to America
and she learned how to drive
seemed like motion was the only thing
made her feel alive

she did a night in jail in Austin
went cold turkey in L.A.
she met people everywhere
she just never knew what to say
she sold cocaine on the sideline
just for something to do
haunted strip clubs and motels
looking for a clue

(chorus)

when I met her in Georgia
she only owned two dresses
she was one of those people you meet in life
who never sees the true beauty she possesses
she said, "I'm just a road whore
I come and go with the rain"
but I felt her like a sister
and I wish I could have eased her pain

(chorus)

she had a sweet tooth for daiquiris
and opium kisses
she had a furnished room in Nashville
then a flea bag in Memphis
she said she's born in a graveyard
on the 4th of July
yeah that's what she said
but sometimes she lied
baptized in blues
when she was just knee high
Track Name: Life in the Minor Leagues
LIFE IN THE MINOR LEAGUES

well, it's life in the minor leagues
we get beer in the locker room for free
but we pay our own rent
and we pay our own dues
and we learn how to laugh
while we learn how to lose
in extra innings

but we ain't a bad ticket for the price
the view from the cheap seats is pretty nice
you're sitting closer to the action
where the game's the main attraction
it sure ain't money or fame
and the guys on the team
they sure are glad you came

but if it's true that the umpire is blind
then I must admit I've seen it from his side
he gets some close calls sliding in
and everybody wants to win
but the excuses are useless
and the wheel keeps spinning
while we're sinning

and we learn how to laugh
while we learn how to lose
while we learn how to laugh
while we learn how to lose

it's a funny kind of way to be blessed
now I'm getting used to it I guess
come out and watch us work tonight
we'll put on a show alright
and you just might see some plays
that belong in the big time

hey that's just life in the minor leagues
I'm dead focused on my game
hey that's just life
Track Name: My Skin
MY SKIN

sick boy got healed
when he learned to steal
he said it made him feel
born again
and the band cranked up
like a change of luck
when I learned to love
my skin
my dirty old friend
I confess my sin
I wanta touch it again

hey the police came around
tried to burn me down
but they never have found
my skin
what they can't understand
what got me high again
that ain't contraband
it's my skin
my dirty old friend
I confess my sin
I wanta touch it again

(chorus)
it's the push and the shove
and the sheriff's thugs
and the sheriff's drugs
I'll rise above
because I learned to love
my skin

it's a stupid love song
but you still sing along
because you'd rather be wrong
than shed that skin
it's a tough kick drum
and a soulful strum
lyrics tattooed on
my skin
my dirty old friend
I confess my sin
I wanta touch it again

(chorus)

it's my temple my stage
my blank book page
and I sure wanta save
my skin
Track Name: Modigliani Eyes
MODIGLIANI EYES

you stare off past the window and the sky
you don't see if I'm dead or alive
you're blank as canvas, you're tough as stone
I carve your statue then I'm all alone

and you look right through me
with your Modigliani eyes
do you see my future
with your Modigliani eyes
eyes

first time I met you in that candle dim café
I knew I'd love you til my skin burned away
and love is ugly like a suicide
then love is pretty like a blushing bride

and you look right through me
with your Modigliani eyes
do you see my heart beat
with your Modigliani eyes
eyes

you're my model, keep holding that pose
I'm gonna paint you body and soul
before I pass out, draw it down true
you are my classic masterpiece nude

and you look right through me
with your Modigliani eyes
do you see forever
with your Modigliani eyes
eyes

someday them wolves will come howling at our gravestones
they won't dig up no secrets or bones
I already confessed I've been a prostitute
to buy guitars and write a song about you

and you look right through me
with your Modigliani eyes...
Track Name: I Still Love the Old Dogs
I STILL LOVE THE OLD DOGS

I love old dogs passed out
twitching while they dream
when they wake up and howl at the full moon
I know just what they mean
oh the young pups ain't learned nothing yet
about true love or pain
hey and I still love the old dogs
the ones who still remain

when I was a young boy
I never felt my age
whenever I saw an old man
I'd walk up and ask his name
oh I felt like I could talk to him
somehow I felt the same
maybe I'm just an old soul
passing through again
like the echo from the whistle
on a midnight train

or maybe I'm just a dreamer
and I just can't wake up
or maybe I'm just rehearsing
instead of growing up
or maybe I'm just scared about
how I might wind up someday
but I know I love the old dogs
the ones who still remain

and I love old dogs passed out
twitching while they dream
when they wake up and howl at the full moon
I know just what they mean
I love old poets and old singers
and old houses and old friends
yes and I still love the old dogs
passing through again
like the echo from the whistle
on a midnight train

oh the young pups ain't learned nothing yet
about true love or pain
hey and I still love the old dogs
the ones who still remain
Track Name: This'll Get Us to Birmingham
THIS'LL GET US TO BIRMINGHAM

this'll get us to Birmingham
past that I'm really not sure
I guess we'll just have to drive this rattletrap
til she won't drive anymore
hey it's been you and me brother
right down the line
but tonight we're running out of bread
running out of wine

but this'll get us to Birmingham
beneath these thunderstorm skies
these windshield wipers are useless they can't
wipe the tears from our eyes
hey it's been you and me brother
right down the line
but tonight we're running out of gas
running out of wine

(chorus)
but this'll get us to motherfucking Birmingham
this'll get us to motherfucking Birmingham
hey before I blasted out of Atlanta, I fell into
the dark beauty with the silver spoon
she won't be wanting me back anytime soon
since you and I got dirty/busted
since we walked on the moon

but this'll get us to Birmingham
this'll get the blood rushing through
this'll get us sweating, teeth chattering
we'll split those twisters in two
hey it's been you and me brother
right down the line
but tonight we're running out of bread
running out of wine

but this'll get us to Birmingham
just a little touch of driving dust
this'll keep us on our toes til the storm blows over
til we find somebody to trust
hey it's been you and me brother
right down the line
but tonight we're running out of gas
running out of wine

(chorus)

but this'll get us to Birmingham
get us there safe and sound
don't know what we'll do tomorrow but
we sure ain't turning around
hey it's been you and me brother
right down the line
but tonight we're running out of bread
running out of wine

but this'll get us to motherfucking Birmingham
